Learning to Fly
After a long year in quarantine, we took our first trip to the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge during the week of Earth day and my boo’s birthday. Most people go to see the ponies, but we went for the birds (can you say bird nerds?). The trip was absolutely amazing as we bared witness to the diverse wildlife the refuge supports. We saw new-born ponies, fox squirrels, turtles, and SO—many—birds ranging from the amazingly graceful Great Egret and baby American Black Ducks to multiple sightings of Bald Eagles. The peace and beauty of this place inspired me to create this adorable fluffy muppet. He barely even has wings, just little feather fluffs, but he’s still confidently taking on the world. Maybe we should all take a page from his book, every day, every task even, is a journey to take on with open wings. Even if in little baby steps, we can learn to fly just like he is.
This muppet was born in April 2021 and created in pencil, ink, colored in Copic markers, and highlights were added using white ink. This fine-art print is 5x5 inches and on 100% cotton, true baryta (barium sulfate) fiber paper that offers the density of a traditional darkroom FB-type paper to hold detail in the deep blacks of the shadow regions, while producing natural white highlights that’s enhanced with a slight fiber glossy surface texture.
Why are African Pygmy Falcons awesome? These little guys live in parts of eastern and southern Africa. When I say little, I mean little! They are about 7.5 inches long and weigh only 1.9-2.3 ounces! They are actually the “smallest bird of prey found in Africa.” - Learn more here!
