Hatching New Beginnings

This baby sea turtle (hatchling) was the very first piece of artwork that I did for myself in Copic markers. The elation and life he exhibits brought me the courage I needed daily to continue making changes in my life and what happiness it has brought me. He was created to represent all the incredible pleasures life has to offer and the realization of how amazing it all is.

This hatchling was born in October of 2019. He’s created in pencil, ink, and colored in Copic markers. This fine-art print is 5x5 inches and on 100% cotton, true baryta (barium sulfate) fiber paper that offers the density of a traditional darkroom FB-type paper to hold detail in the deep blacks of the shadow regions, while producing natural white highlights that’s enhanced with a slight fiber glossy surface texture.

Why are sea turtles awesome? “Sea turtles play a vital role in ocean ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs, providing key habitat for other marine life, helping to balance marine food webs and facilitating nutrient cycling from water to land.”
- oceana.org

What can we do to help protect sea turtles? “Participate in coastal clean-ups and reduce plastic use to keep our beaches and ocean clean. Plastic bags look like jelly fish to a sea turtle, so carrying reusable water bottles and shopping bags can help save them! Refrain from releasing balloons, they'll likely end up in the ocean where sea turtles can mistake them for prey and consume them. To learn more: fisheries.noaa.gov
